A fast-moving winter storm is bringing rain and snow to Kansas for Wednesday night into Thursday, and northern areas of the state could get up to three inches. As air temperatures drop near the 32° mark, the rainfall will transition to an icy mix (freezing rain, sleet).
The transition to colder temperatures will occur along with rain, which will change over to freezing rain, sleet and eventually snow for many from the Tennessee and OH valleys into interior sections of the Mid-Atlantic region and Northeast Friday night. Snow is expected from Friday evening, and will continue into Friday night, tapering off Saturday morning.
Some light snow may linger into Saturday morning.
The National Weather Service in Cleveland has issued a winter storm warning for much of northeastern OH and western Pennsylvania, including Crawford, Venango, and Erie counties. A cold front will move through Kentucky around daybreak Friday, with temperatures quickly dropping throughout the rest of the day.
10 a.m. – 6 p.m. “Snow with the cold front only accumulated ~1-3”. The Kansas Highway Patrol reported helping more than 130 drivers in northeast Kansas and responded to 11 crashes, including a rollover on I-70, near Auburn Rd. Temperatures have dipped into the 20s from highs in the 60’s on Thursday.
Preparing for the upcoming storm is “typical protocol” for a central NY winter, Jones said. One to two inches of sleet and snow accumulation is expected.
The Mid-Atlantic and Northeast get their own special surprise on Saturday: a layer of ice topped with another layer of snow. After weeks of below-freezing temperatures, most of the East coast warmed to above average this week, with almost two dozen high temperature records possibly set Friday afternoon.
WHERE.South central IN and parts of central Kentucky.
Snowfall will start Friday morning and continue until around noon for the region. A WIND CHILL ADVISORY remains in effect for eastern Montana through the night into Thursday morning. It is this time period that will either cut eventual snow totals or help them out. The drop in temperature is expected to be between 20 to 40 degrees over the course of 24 hours, with the larger drops further north.
This is a system that Storm Team 27 is watching closely. The longer we have sleet and freezing rain, the lower the snow totals.
