Weather: Warm start to the new month, colder days follow (2/1 AM)

The weather continues to look quite interesting for Super Bowl Sunday. But McDowell County may be looking at still more winter weather despite what the groundhog sees.

A lot of factors play into the forecast this evening.

Folks in the Morganton area might wake up with a little snow on the ground Friday morning, and that won’t be the last opportunity for icy conditions to end the week with an inch of snow possible over the weekend.

Yes, the rain is coming Thursday night and as it arrives with a cold front, there may be a switchover to light snow overnight, but apparently nothing to get excited about. Patchy fog after 10 p.m. I do expect higher elevations to transition faster. That being said, some moderate to heavy snow accumulations are possible Sunday into Monday in parts of interior Northeast. Grassy surfaces, sidewalks, decks, porches and rooftops will receive more accumulation than the roadways. Precipitation: Morning flurries transitioning to steady late day snow.

Friday night, the low will be around 29 with mostly cloudy skies, according to the weather service, and a south southwest wind of 8 miles per hour.

“So, a lot of this will be cleared out by the time the morning commute starts”, Parveen said. The good news is that the bulk of the snow will be wrapped up to mainly just flakes at that point. Clouds initially will break for sunshine as a northwest breeze behind our departing storm system becomes gusty and drives in a reinforcing shot of seasonably cold air.

The weather service forecasts temperatures in the upper 40s and low 50s on Saturday and Sunday, with no precipitation expected.

Saturday will be a quiet day in Central New York.

There is a small risk for a rain or snow shower into This morning. The average low in January this year was 16.9 degrees, noticeably cooler than the normal of 19.1 degrees. Lows will be in the lower 30s. Temperatures will be in the 20s and lower 30s tomorrow morning, but they will likely drop through the 20s during the afternoon.

The first system already moved through the Midwest and the Great Lakes bringing a heavy burst of snow from Minneapolis to Green Bay, Wisconsin, and into MI overnight.

This backyard view shows snow accumulation in Lapeer Michigan on Monday morning. The winter storm is set to hit the Ohio Valley and New England with snow by Monday evening
