Jimmy Garoppolo is set to become the NFL’s highest-paid player.
The San Francisco 49ers stabilized their quarterback position for the next several seasons on Thursday morning after inking Jimmy Garoppolo to a five-year, $137.5 million deal.
“We believe we found the right guy”, Lynch told the NFL Network at the Senior Bowl. Kudos to those that stuck with the team through the last few years and be ready to watch a contender in 2018. Stafford’s contract totals $135 million, Carr’s adds up to $125 million, and Luck’s is $122 million. By the time they enter the final seasons of their rookie contracts, they could be looking at $35 million a season.
The one possible mitigating factor is that there is no word yet on how much of that money is guaranteed. The 49ers also have yet to announce or confirm the deal. The Jaguars came into the game having allowed the fewest points and passing yards in the National Football League, but Garoppolo went 5 of 6 for 75 yards on the opening drive alone.
But they don’t want to make him mad.
If money is a priority for Cousins, he should have no problem topping the deal that was just handed to a quarterback with seven starts on his resume. Garoppolo ended his season carving up three top-ranked playoff defenses, the Jacksonville Jaguars, Los Angeles Rams and Tennessee Titans.
Garoppolo spent the first three-and-a-half seasons of his career with the New England Patriots, making just two starts while primarily serving as the backup to Tom Brady.
Garoppolo has a prime opportunity to quickly establish himself as one of the top quarterbacks in the game, as his new contract would suggest.
That, of course, is not how it played out.
Rogers will earn $19.8 million next season and $20 million in 2019 while Brady’s salary next season is a measly $14 million. Spending in free agency will only tie up their cap and make it hard to re-sign guys like Buckner and Foster in the future. The 49ers are getting a good player, and they’re getting a good person, and they’re getting a great teammate and they’re getting a good quarterback.
Should San Francisco place the tag on either Hyde or Reid, the latter makes a bit more sense.
The Garoppolo pact provides a crystal-clear baseline for quarterback pay, but Garafolo noted that “people around the league already expected the Cousins deal to be in the area of $30 million anyway”.
