Going out 19th, Mowinckel then sandwiched herself between the esteemed pair, finishing just behind Goggia, having initially been in the green for the first three intermediates.
“There were a few turns where I didn’t quite get the line, didn’t quite carve it out enough, didn’t quite trust myself but overall I am really stoked with today”, said Small, who had been battling a head cold. “I think it was a pretty big disadvantage to be honest”.
The 33-year-old will have another chance to become the oldest female medallist in Olympic Alpine skiing in her favoured downhill on the same mountain next week. “I gave this my best shot”, she explained.
Goggia’s gold is Italy’s third at the Games, two fewer than the United States who are sixth in the medal table with a disappointing haul of 13 medals.
Lindsey Vonn of the USA competes in women’s downhill alpine skiing. Michaela Dorfmeister of Austria was 32 years, 332 days in winning the super-G in Torino in 2006. In the women’s Super-G race, skiers take just one run down the hill.
She also thanked her teammates for their encouragement and understanding in the face of serious injuries.
Eight years ago, Lindsey Vonn blew up as one of the faces of the Vancouver Winter Olympics.
Vonn will compete in the Olympic women’s downhill Tuesday at 7 p.m. MT. I have four. Five, with this”, Goggia acknowledged, “But she’s unbelievable.
“My momentum is picking up”, she said. You tell me. I was riding. “I’m really trying to win and do a good run every time but I didn’t really realsie that this really can happen”.
“I’m actually happy to be sixth and not fourth”. But it’s always an honor to race with Lindsey Vonn … “I wish I could keep going. But I think he still is”.
Vonn missed the Sochi Games four years ago after tearing ligaments in her right knee and has said this will be her last go-round at an Olympics.
“I was probably the only snowboarder on site”, Ledecka said. I work hard and try to be the best person I can be. I have no regrets.
Vonn dedicated her Olympics to her late grandfather, Don Kildow, who died last November at age 88.
“She could never put it all together”, Italy’s Sofia Goggia, who finished 11th, said of Ledecka. It’s my last downhill. I love what I do. But – I don’t know, I’m proud. “I’m proud. I’m proud to have competed for my country”. Proud to have given it my all. “It might not be a medal, but I definitely gave it everything I had”.
