Lindsey Vonn takes bronze in Olympic downhill behind Italy’s Goggia

On Wednesday, Vonn skied mistake-free.

Five-time Olympian Lydia Lassila, who won a bronze medal in Sochi, has retired from the sport after missing out on the women’s aerials final while David Morris, a silver medallist in 2014, is also likely to have turned his last trick at the games.

Vonn, Goggia said. “It’s like she has already made this”. She knows there are only so many miles left.

After the race Vonn revealed she had invited Goggia to her house in November to discuss dealing with pressure and expectation. “It has been an emotional day all round because it’s probably my last Olympic downhill race but I’m on the podium so I’m very happy”, she said. “I love what I do”, Vonn said. They finished fifth on Wednesday. Laurenne Ross finished 15th. She also edged Vonn in March to win the only World Cup downhill contested on the hill.

She won both of those medals at the 2010 Vancouver Games, when she became the only American woman ever to have won gold in the Olympics’ downhill.

Vonn crashed heavily in the Super-G and needed to be airlifted to hospital.

It takes years of dedication and skill to get to the Olympics. All the same, they are, genuinely, friends.

An executive at the South Korean retail conglomerate Lotte, a local Olympics sponsor and exclusive seller of Pyeongchang merchandise, said the company took notice when people in their 20s and 30s, traditionally considered liberal, opposed the decision to field an inter-Korean ice hockey team.

Knight said before this season that Vonn was competing at “50 to 60 percent” of her physical ability.
