After losing to USA, Canadian hockey player refuses to wear silver medal

Canada has a win-or-bust mentality when it comes to hockey.

Canada’s gold-medal streak in Olympic women’s hockey ended Thursday with a 3-2 shootout loss to the United States at the Pyeongchang Winter Games.

“Ten players were with us in 2014”, Team USA coach Robb Stauber said. I am just so thankful for the outcome. It was a thrilling final. “It’s just hard. You work so hard”. While the United States won that inaugural gold medal in Nagano, it’s been Canada doing the celebrating in each of the last four Olympic cycles and the United States wiping away tears.

The United States now has eight gold medals, seven silver and six bronze, totaling 21 medals thus far.

When you’re hot, you’re hot. That’s why the gold and bronze medal winners may feel more accomplished immediately after a game. During the last Winter Olympics in Sochi, it was the reverse situation, in which Canada edged out the USA for gold.

Team USA has surged in recent days, winning 11 medals in the last three days alone.

The members of the U.S. Women’s hockey team, stand together with their gold medals around their necks, after they defeated the Canadian team in a shootout, February 22, 2018. The game was super viscious with so many hard hits as both teams really wanted to bring home the gold.

The US prevailed 3-2 in the shoot-out after the teams were locked at 2-2 after regulation and through a 20-minute overtime period.

GAME NOTES: In some ways, it’s no wonder that the US outshot and outscored the Canadians with seven power plays to the northerners’ two.

The scores were level at 2-2 after five penalty shots each, but USA’s Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson scored past Shannon Szabados before Maddie Rooney saved from Canada’s Meghan Agosta.

Hilary Knight also scored for the United States, with Sidney Morin, Brianne Decker and Kelly Pannek assisting on one goal each. He didn’t worry about Rooney even after Haley Irwin and captain Marie-Philip Poulin scored in the second period to give Canada a 2-1 lead.

In between the Olympics, Canada and the United States of America clash in worldwide tournaments but this is the Olympics.

The smile she had in the shootout rarely left her face after the result was final, beaming as she was second-to-last in the line of her teammates when they received their gold medals on the ice, placed around their necks by Angela Ruggiero, a member of the 1998 USA team that won gold.

But Canada took over in the second, a period in which the USA had dominated opponents for much of the tournament, scoring twice and turning up the heat defensively to shut down the American attack.

The U.S. women’s hockey team finally returned to the top of the Olympic podium with a dramatic, heart-stopping display of hockey against rival Canada.

So now Canada is 5-3 in head-to-head competition with the total score of 20-20. “We are what you just saw and now the world knows it”.

The game had finished 2-2 after overtime.

American freestyle skier David Wise held firm to defend his Winter Olympic ski halfpipe title.

Turns out he was right.

“It’s a pretty good story”. “It’s something we’ve worked for our entire lives”. “We come from a rich history of curling where we won everything, and that’s not the way it is anymore”.

In the same day, the men’s curling team gained a spot in the Olympic gold-medal game.

It appears women’s hockey is on solid ground as the sport moves on.

This isn’t the first time Larocque has participated in a gold medal game at the Winter Olympics.
