Ivanka Trump Arrives in S. Korea, Aims to Reaffirm Commitment to Ally

Inter-Korean diplomacy isn’t about nuclear weapons. The former North Korean intelligence chief’s three-day trip to the country is already stirring controversy due to his links to attacks on South Korea.

Trump will attend the Closing Ceremony on Sunday night and will dine with South Korean President Moon Jae-in at his residence, the Blue House, on Friday. The content of this agreement includes the early completion of construction for stage one of the inter-Korean economic cooperation project, the Kaesong industrial complex; the organization of a meeting facility at Mt. Kumgang, where tourist business was conducted until July 2008; and the implementation of tourist business following the opening of a direct route from Seoul to Mt. Paektu, a scenic spot in the northern region of North Korea.

Rep. Jun Hee-kyung, a spokeswoman for the opposition Liberty Korea Party, issued a statement calling Kim “the main culprit of the Cheonan’s sinking”, saying Kim should be “brought to his knees” in front of the victims’ families and dismissing his visit as an “extraordinary humiliation” for South Koreans.

The eyes of the world will be on Ivanka as millions wait to see if she stands up as the North-South Korean athletes march by again at the closing. “It also suggests their intention to split public opinion in South Korea and attempt to see the potential different views between the South and the US while superficially decorating themselves as showing magnanimous and bold sincerity”.

During the opening ceremony, Vice President Mike Pence assiduously avoided acknowledging Kim, even though she was seated nearly directly behind him.

He can anticipate that a summit will sow more strife on its own. She is still alive today and recently warned not to trust North Korea’s current dictator Kim Jong-un’s outreach.

The risk of US -led military action has not gone away either.

The United States continues to insist that North Korea must come to the negotiating table prepared to denuclearize.

In the background of all this distraction, North Korea is preparing to make a show of force.

“President Moon also said out of all countries, South Korea has the strongest will to say it can not acknowledge North Korea as a nuclear state”. A 2017 study by the United Nations revealed that 18 million people in North Korea are not getting enough food, and North Korean women are especially at risk of suffering from malnutrition.

Unfortunately, the administration has few tools with which to achieve this.

The United States also proposed a list of entities to be blacklisted under separate U.N. sanctions, a move “aimed at shutting down North Korea’s illicit maritime smuggling activities to obtain oil and sell coal”. The Olympic rapprochement with the South, however, has compelled Washington to abort some of its plans, at Seoul’s request.

Preventive strikes would not denuclearize North Korea and would probably spark a catastrophic conflict.

Even if Kim resumes his tests and tensions with the USA rise again after the Games, the temporary detente will still be seen as a success. Meanwhile, it can proceed with mass producing, and fielding, nuclear missiles. In 1954, the two states had roughly equivalent populations, and the North was more industrialized.

Its scientists are likely working as furiously as ever to improve its nuclear arsenal’s sophistication and to ideal an ICBM reentry vehicle. It’s not yet clear what the dynamics will be in the VIP box of Olympic Stadium this time around. But he may conclude that this achievement was equally a result of his recent saber-rattling, and of having exceeding outsiders’ expectations for his nuclear progress.

Rhee demanded, as South Korea’s condition for peace, that the North agree to reunification under the existing South Korean constitution.

“The North will make full use of the atmosphere during the PyeongChang Olympics”, Cha said.

Kim also allegedly orchestrated laying landmines in the demilitarized zone between the North and South that maimed two South Korean soldiers in August 2015. “If our government helps her understand South Korea’s situation on the peninsula, it could help improve Seoul-Washington ties”, the paper wrote.

Let’s hope it is not broken by fire and fury.
