The tech giant announced MateBook X Pro, a 13.9-inch Windows 10 device it says is thinner than Apple’s most recent MacBook.
But while the Surface re-thought what a laptop could be, offering us a detachable screen and new ways of working, the X Pro lacks that kind of daring that could make it stand out in a crowded market.
The Chinese telecom company unveiled the MateBook X Pro Feb. 25.
I loved last year’s MateBook X. It’s 14.6 mm thick and weighs 2.93 pounds, but there’s still space for two Thunderbolt 3 ports, a USB Type A port, and a headphone jack.
But the MateBook X Pro’s webcam will nearly always be shut, and that means it’ll be unavailable to those who might take advantage of it.
In terms of pricing, the Matebook X Pro with i8/8GB/256GB configuration is priced at €1499 (approximately Rs 119,300). And now that the company has released its own 5G chip, Huawei will likely take on the likes of Qualcomm. The display also features a Corning Gorilla glass and has a unibody metal design.
For starters, it’s an outright gorgeous-looking laptop. There is also a backlight for the keyboard that helps improve the device usability at night and when it is dark.
All three versions of the tablet come with Wi-Fi and LTE capabilities, so you’ll be able to insert a SIM card to browse the internet on the move. As before, the screen looks great. The company boasts that the display has 100 percent sRGB color gamut. Colours looked rich and vibrant, without being overcooked. The amperage of the battery is unknown, but Huawei claims its good for 10/11 hours.
The keys on the keyboard travel 1.22mm, which is the same as on the MateBook X.
The return of the fingerprint scanner is another welcome addition. With hidden laptop, it assures that nothing is recording you secretly.
The rest of the specifications include quad-speakers with Dolby Atmos certification, built in quad-microphones, and Windows 10 OS. Not the 970, so don’t get your hopes up for any AI assist.
The only design feature I’m not completely sold on is the Matebook’s custom “recessed camera”. Meanwhile, even if you close the lid with the camera popped out, it’ll gently close rather than scratch the display. It pops up from the keyboard when pressed, in theory making it a safer bet for privacy-conscious buyers.
There’s a 13-megapixel camera sensor placed on the back panel and an 8-megapixel front-facing snapper for video calling. The important thing to note is that the Huawei charger is closer to a phone charger than one of those bulky laptop ones. Like DeX, it gives you a desktop with application icons that feels a lot more like a laptop than a tablet.
Last year’s Huawei Matebook X was very almost a MacBook killer. Here’s everything you need to know, along with some early thoughts. Unlike the original Matebook X, the Pro comes with a full 10-point touch screen which adds to the ways you can interact with it, although the trackpad is still my preferred input method.
