International Women’s Day 2018: #PressforProgress

March 07 14:11 2018

Equality between men and women was embedded in the 1957 Treaty of Rome establishing the European Economic Community, the forerunner to the European Union.

But, as successful as the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements have been in raising public awareness, the struggle for parity is far from over.

The marches took place in several areas of the Gaza Strip and eventually met in front of the United Nations office.

People are “wildly over-optimistic” about how quickly the gender pay gap will be closed, a survey to mark International Women Day has signalled.

The gender disparity is starkly revealed when comparing a man and a woman at the upper-most end of the confidence scale: your chances of promotion rise from 8 per cent to 14% if you’re a highly confident man, but remain at around 7 to 8 per cent if you’re a highly confident woman. The day was renamed International Women’s Day, and was observed in Europe and the US.

All this apart, women will need to stand by #pressforprogress to close down on gender inequality at the earliest and not let obstacles dampen their career prospects.

Gender equality is an essential precondition for equitable and inclusive sustainable development, which will not take place if half of the world’s population is left behind. “The bright side is that 44% men confirm that they can be effective advocates for gender initiative programs at workplace”.

Salome Zurabishvili, CiDA representative, Managing Head of the Global Compact Network Georgia, also participated at the event. From Latin America to Europe to Asia, on social media, film sets, the factory floor and in the streets, women are calling for lasting change and zero tolerance for sexual assault, harassment and discrimination of all kinds.Achieving gender equality and empowering women and girls is the unfinished business of our time, and the world’s greatest human rights challenge.
