Daylight Savings Time begins Sunday

We’ll change the clocks again on Sunday, November 6, 2018, gaining a bit more rest for your hibernating needs. The Florida bill still has to be signed by Gov. Rick Scott, and approved by Congress. Arizona and Hawaii don’t make the time change. Don’t forget to set your clock ahead one hour Saturday night when you go to bed. Neither returned phone calls or emails for comment.

Come Sunday, half the clocks in my house – those that have been off by an hour since November – will display the correct time. In the U.S., it is a federal law but states can request to be exempted.

Based exclusively on the findings from our two studies, along with a study showing that the time change predicts a 5 percent increased incidence of heart attacks, economists estimate that the annual spring time change costs the American economy US$434 million each year. Moving it back when time changes in the fall appears to have a similar risk.

Keeping Florida on daylight saving time permanently would put it in sync with Nova Scotia on Atlantic Standard Time instead of NY. With sleep patterns interrupted by the time change, more drivers could be exhausted as they hit the roads next week.

But now some states are considering ending the tradition of re-setting their clocks twice a year. “I kind of like having the longer days”, he said.

That’s right, spring is less than two weeks away and Daylight Saving Time takes effect this weeked.

This was originally so it would stay light longer, and people would need less heat, during World War I. The modern concept itself originated with a paper written in 1895 by a New Zealander. It’s been modified several times, including year-round “War Time” during WWII.

Benjamin Franklin did not invent daylight saving time. He put together a report that outlined 10 reasons why Daylight Saving Time was a good idea.

The Uniform Time Act of 1966 addressed that challenge by synchronizing the switch dates across the country. The Times Square ball won’t drop until 1 in the morning!

The shift from standard to daylight saving time officially comes at 2 a.m. Sunday across much of the country. That would save everyone, well … more time.
