Steve Smith steps down as captain for remainder of Cape Town Test

March 25 11:07 2018

There have been calls for Smith, who took over the captaincy in 2015, to step down or be sacked as Australia skipper after he admitted to being the mastermind of the ball-tampering saga.

Smith and Bancroft made the admission after the latter was caught taking a mysterious yellow paper-like item out of his pocket and putting it down his pants during the third day of the third Test against South Africa in Cape Town.

Sutherland, however, said the 28-year-old would continue to lead the side while the investigation played out.

With the CA chairman David Peever in transit home from South Africa, Sutherland chose not to travel to see the team himself, instead delegating the matter to the head of integrity, Iain Roy, and the team performance manager Pat Howard.

“The game needs to have a hard look at itself”, Richardson said.

This series has been full of incidents, as the Australian cricketers face heat from the crowds.

Australia started day four trailing South Africa by 294 runs with two days of the test remaining. I want to reiterate that we are dealing with this matter with appropriate urgency.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Tim Paine will act as Australia captain for the remainder of the third Test against South Africa.

Neither Smith nor Bancroft contested their charges, and both men could be hit by further sanctions from Cricket Australia, which is carrying out its own investigation.

“As a young player starting out in worldwide cricket, I hope the lessons learned from this episode will strongly influence the way he plays the game during the rest of his career”. I imagine if that option was available in cricket, CA would be writing a cheque right now.

Smith, 28, has said he would not quit, adding: “I still think I’m the right person for the job”.

Michael Clarke kept open the possibility he could return as Australia captain Sunday, after a massive ball-tampering scandal in the third Test against South Africa plagued his successor Steve Smith. “I can’t believe if the leadership group has made a decision to do this that they’ve gone and got the young kid.as a leader you can’t ask somebody to do something you’re not willing to do yourself”.

The Australians get some yellow sticky tape from a team kit bag, see if they can get some loose dirt from the pitch stuck to it when they’re back out on the field, and then use it to rough up the ball. “I was extremely disappointed and shocked to hear the news this morning after the events in Cape Town yesterday, ‘ he said”.

The tampering scandal has caused uproar around the cricket world, and backlash from fans and officials in Australia.

Former South African captain Graeme Smith said the current team was unlike previous Australian outfits he had encountered, pointing to a move from before the tour to try to get South African fast bowler Kagiso Rabada banned.

“It’s wrong, and I look forward to Cricket Australia taking decisive action soon”.

“Unfortunately, this is blatant cheating and Steve Smith will have to step down as Australian captain”, Hogg said on Twitter.

“Today was a big mistake on my behalf and on the leadership group’s behalf as well”.
