Southwest passenger died after broken plane window almost sucked her out

Investigators said that a fan inside the plane’s jet engine broke off from its hub, causing the failure. “There is evidence of metal fatigue where the blade separated”. A piece of the Southwest engine cowling Tuesday was found on the ground in Bernville, Pa., about 60 miles northwest of Philadelphia, Sumwalt said.

We are deeply saddened to confirm that there is one fatality resulting from this accident. The seven other victims suffered minor injuries.

We’re so glad she did – and we bet so are the passengers of Southwest Airlines flight 1380.

Tammie’s husband Dean a licensed pilot, Medical Class 1, and also served in the Navy.

But those close to her said she’s always had the skills necessary to perform the job.

One woman died from injuries sustained after almost being sucked out of the open window. The airline said it would make sure the flight crew is feeling fit for duty before they head back in the air.

Passenger Alfred Tumlinson told WPVI: “She has nerves of steel”. Objects flew out the hole where the window had been, and “passengers right next to her were holding onto her”.

“On behalf of the [University of New Mexico] Alumni Association, we are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our board member and esteemed community member Jennifer Riordan“, a statement from the university said.

Other passengers began trying to plug the hole with jackets and other objects but to no avail.

Jennifer Riordon, the woman who was almost sucked out of a Southwest airplane mid-flight on Tuesday, was a banker on her way home to her husband and two young children. The airline did not immediately confirm engine damage.

He said his “thoughts and prayers” are with the family of the woman who died and praised the flight crew for landing the aircraft safely.

The air traffic control recording of the exchange between Shults and Philadelphia air control reveals an impossibly calm Shults.

The engine failed while the plane was on its way from NY to Dallas, and shrapnel smashed a window and damaged the fuselage, killing a passenger and injuring seven others, authorities said.

“Injured passengers, OK, and is your airplane physically on fire?” asks the air controller.

She wanted to fly planes and signed up with the Navy, only after the Air Force denied her a chance to become a pilot, according to a former classmate. “There are a lot of really thoughtful and heroic things that went on during the flight”, she said.

Captain Tammie Jo Shults, one of the first women fighter pilots in the US Navy, was hailed as an American hero Wednesday for calmly landing a stricken passenger jet after a midair engine explosion that killed a mother-of-two.

“Something is wrong with our plane!”

He says he was just settling in and dozing off on the flight when he heard a loud boom and says the oxygen masks dropped. “We were still doing CPR when the plane landed”, said nurse Peggy Williams. “All the passengers wanted to know who we owed our lives to”, he said.

This month European regulators ordered checks following lengthy analysis of a non-fatal incident at Southwest two years ago but investigators warn it is too early to say whether the two problems are linked.

But part of it is missing.

The plane descended precipitously, Johnson said, but the pilot regained control and informed passengers the flight was headed to Philadelphia.

Southwest is known for its strong safety record.
