“I feel it’s my duty as an Alaskan student to stand up and say, here it’s the worst and we need change here”, said Zak Lanis, Lathrop High School.

On April 20, 199, about 19 years ago, the shooting massacre at Columbine High School stunned the nation.

“I do think that at a minimum we should be enforcing the will of the people”, said Senator Aaron Ford, D- Nevada.

“I’ve lost like two friends to gun violence”.

Mclendon tells News 5 the walk-out was worth the unexcused absence since she’s personally affected by gun violence.

Just this year alone, we have already had five school threats in our area: Mason City Schools, Riceville Schools, Austin Schools, Century High School and Triten Schools.

“We’re still going to have school shootings and we’re still going to have an issue with guns”.

Many students said the turnout was greater than expected, with more than 600 students participating.

“We’ve got to do something to take back our neighborhoods, to take back our streets”, Liccardo said.

Minnesota student leaders aimed to take a broader focus than Friday’s national walkouts, which centered on school violence.

Across the way at City Hall, several hundred students from across the city held a six-minute “die-in” to highlight the fact that a Philadelphian is shot, on average, every six hours. “So I’m going to ask you to stay in school”.

“One of the worst things to do if you want something to change is to remain silent”, she said.

They killed 12 students and one teacher and left 23 students hurt. They said they don’t want to have to keep holding walkouts, and they understand that these events interfere with their education, but they have to keep fighting.
