Colorado casinos also welcomed the Supreme Court decision.
Although most lawmakers said they didn’t realize it at the time, MS changed its law in 2017 to allow sports betting as part of a bill legalizing and regulating fantasy sports.
“I don’t see anything happening in 2018”.
“My guess is we will be ramping up the full sports betting as soon as we can I have not talked to the casinos but I’d be surprised if they don’t that”, said Bonini.
“That might be what bring them back you know, bring more people to Tunica”, said Jonathan Smith from Tunica.
The U.S. Supreme Court today struck down a federal law that prohibited sports betting. The specific law being challenged in court was a 2014 New Jersey law, which did not specifically authorize sports gambling.
A representative from the organization explained they predict many more people will develop gambling problems or worsen existing ones unless steps are taken to minimize risks.
New Jersey calling this a big win for their state as they pushed the issue and took it all the way to the Supreme Court. But before you start placing your sports bets legally, a constitutional law professor at Santa Clara University says there are still other hurdles.
The federal law that banned betting barred the practice in 46 states. Now that it has, the bill will go through the committee process in Sacramento. And there’s only a $25 fee on Calcutta applications to help make sure the paperwork is processed correctly. The proposed legislation also would legalize mobile sports betting.
Introduced by Ford, the Senate bill wouldn’t include the integrity fee, but would impose a fee on those conducting sports wagering. So sport wagering will remain illegal in Iowa – at least for now.
DraftKings is wasting no time throwing its hat into the sports betting arena after the Supreme Court decision to allow states to legalize sports gambling. “It’s entirely possible that game developers will lobby for esports to not be swept in with other sports for the purposes of sports betting, as many have a concern about the impact widespread betting might have on the development of their games and associated leagues”. The state’s commercial casinos came into existence thanks to the Michigan Gaming Control and Revenue Act of 1996.
“I think it’s our right as Americans to be in a free country to be able to do something like bet sports”, Paven said.
While no one knows the exact size of the sports betting market, the American Gaming Association estimates almost $150 billion is wagered on sports every year, with only $4.5 billion being gambled in legally operating sportsbooks.
States that want to move forward with this ruling will have to pass legislation to allow sports books to open.
And again, that’s if esports betting will get the same attention from state legislators and regulators.
It is not clear if Wisconsin lawmakers will welcome or push away from sports betting.
