Guatemala opens Israeli embassy in Jerusalem after U.S. move

This week’s demonstrations were the bloodiest to date and occurred as the US embassy in Israel officially moved to Jerusalem on Monday, to coincide with the 70th anniversary of the creation of the modern state of Israel.

While some members said the U.N.’s most powerful body needed to speak as one to try to calm the volatile situation – and the Palestinian envoy implored, “When are you going to act?” – a proposed statement had stalled Monday after the us blocked it.

“We started to line up altogether and then walk forward steps together”.

But the start on Thursday of the holy month of Ramadan, when Muslims abstain from eating and drinking during daylight hours, could limit the scale of demonstrations. Hamas appealed to the world, claiming Israeli forces killed 62 Palestinians. They carried her tiny body, wrapped in a Palestinian flag. Gunshots were fired in the air.

The exchanges of fire came after weeks of mass protests and clashes on the Gaza border, which peaked on Monday when more than 60 Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces.

The goal of the protest is to bring global attention to the blockade Israel maintains over the territory and to call for the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their lands in Israel.

Palestinians and rights groups say protesters are being shot despite posing no threat to Israeli soldiers on the other side of the heavily guarded fence. The U.N.’s secretary-general said he was “profoundly alarmed” by the number of Palestinians killed.

While Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman blamed the leaders of the Palestinian militant group Hamas for the Gaza violence, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova urged all parties to the conflict to show restraint and avoid escalating things any further.

Similarly, British Prime Minister Theresa May said the use of live fire by Israeli forces was “deeply troubling“.

On Monday, Israel was bludgeoned with criticism over the violence at the Gaza border and the dozens of Gazans who were killed near the security fence.

Speaking at an emergency meeting of OIC ambassadors at the United Nations Pakistan’s permanent representative Maleeha Lodhi, deplored that one country has again blocked the unanimous call of the 14 other members of the Security Council, to issue a statement merely calling for an independent investigation into the incidents. But a Gazan doctor told the Associated Press the baby had a pre-existing medical condition and he did not believe her death was caused by tear gas.

Erdogan on Tuesday said “Netanyahu is the PM of an apartheid state”.

“The only alternative would have been, in that case, to mow them down one and all”, he said. Husam Zomlot, the Palestinian ambassador to the United States, referred to it as “a blow to any prospects for peace”.
