Other nominees for best ensemble include Netflix African war drama “Beasts of No Nation”, “Wall Street comedy ‘The Big Short’, Catholic Church abuse probe “Spotlight” and rap movie “Straight Outta Compton”.

Eddie Redmayne – Nominee for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role “The Danish Girl”: “It means a great deal to be recognised by my peers during such a wonderful year of filmmaking”.

Still among films that have been seen, there were some glaring omissions, including “The Martian” and “Creed“.

Nominations for the 22nd annual Screen Actors Guild Awards in six films and eight television categories will be announced on Wednesday morning, December 9, 2015, in Los Angeles. The awards will be handed out during a ceremony on 30 January (16).

The day brought mixed news for Spotlight, which got a best ensemble nom – probably the most assured nom of the day, in fact – but landed only one individual acting nom, for supporting actress Rachel McAdams.

Ditto for Ridley Scott’s space adventure, The Martian, starring Matt Damon.

The Oscars race officially kicked off yesterday with the Screen Actors Guild nominations that saw “Trumbo”, a biopic about a blacklisted 1940s screenwriter, score the most nominations. “I think it hits so close to home for many people, making the incredible response so special”. Larson’s Jacob Tremblay and Blanchett’s co-star Rooney Mara are additionally up for best supporting actor and actress respectively.

Trumbo” and TV series “House of Cards” are leading the list of nominees for the 2016 SAG Awards.

British period drama “Downton Abbey”, political thriller “House of Cards” and advertising drama ‘Mad Men” were also nominated for the best drama ensemble cast.

The other nominated comedy ensembles are The Big Bang Theory, Key Peele, Modern Family, Transparent, and Veep.

On Wednesday morning, some 2,200 actors who normally have to beg for the attention of Hollywood’s bigwigs like everyone else instead had their undivided attention. Carol Burnett will receive a Life Achievement Award. But if SAG is, in the main, going to stick with what it knows instead of exploring TV’s ever-expanding far reaches, “Outstanding Performance” may no longer be the appropriate label for its awards.

The biggest surprises came in the miniseries/TV movie categories, where strong performances by David Oyelowo (“Nightingale”), Mo’Nique (“Bessie”), Claire Foy (“Wolf Hall“), and Oscar Isaac (“Show Me a Hero”) went unmentioned in favor of flashier fare and recognizable stars.

With that the case, such overlooked performers as Jennifer Lawrence (“Joy“) and Jennifer Jason Leigh (“The Hateful Eight“) might suddenly drop down in handicapping – though they could easily come back up when the Golden Globe nominations are announced.

Bryan Cranston was a best male actor nominee for'Trumbo' when Screen Actors Guild nominations were announced Wednesday
