But the Cubs have to win Sunday for any of that to happen, and they have only as many World Series wins at Wrigley Field in 102 years as the Indians have in two days. After a nail-biting Game 5 win on Sunday night, the team will head back to Cleveland trailing 3-2 in the series and needing two straight wins to come back and claim its first World Series since 1908.
“Why not us?” he said. “He was aware of being ready in the seventh inning”.
But in what was still a scoreless Game 3 on Friday night, Miller recorded the last out of the fifth with a runner at second, then struck out the side in the sixth.
Bauer has not been sharp this postseason-oh, the directions you could go with that phrasing-and that continued into the World Series, as he pitched the Game 2 loss against Jake Arrieta, going just 3.2 innings with two earned runs on six hits with two walks and strikeouts.
The Indians can win their first World Series since 1947 on Tuesday night, but the Cubs are determined to keep hope alive to end their 108-year drought.
In their playoff history the Cubs have never rallied to win a series when down 3-1.
“He works so hard to be good”, Francona said.
“You hit last so you get to use your bullpen differently, and that’s a huge advantage”.
Make no mistake, playing in an AL park benefits the Cubs as well because they can put Kyle Schwarber back in the lineup – “They’ll also have the DH too, which I’m sure they’re thrilled about”, Francona said – so both lineups will be more imposing in Game 6. Arrieta does have the skill, confidence, and experience necessary to pit a great game against the Indians and shut down such a brilliant Cleveland lineup.
“Chapman, that was a big ask and he answered”.
“In the American League, when you want to take your pitcher out, you take your pitcher out”, Francona said.
“It’s just like any other game where you feel comfortable with the game plan”, Arrieta said of this start. They just can’t catch up to him.
“He’s a bull out there”, Bryant said of Arrieta, the reigning Cy Young Award victor as top pitcher.
Miller got some much-needed rest, meaning he will be able to go as long as needed in Tuesday’s Game 6.
The game: The Indians struck first against Cubs starter Jon Lester, taking an early lead on a solo homer in the top of the second by third baseman Jose Ramirez. Indians starter Trevor Bauer (0-2 in the series and the postseason) gave up three runs in a four-inning outing.
Ben Zobrist followed Rizzo’s double by lacing a single to center and then the Cubs took a softer approach, getting an infield roller, bunt single and sacrifice fly to take a 3-1 lead.
“High anxiety and a lot of deep breaths”, Rizzo said about the pressure.
The Indians tagged Lester – who allowed two runs on four hits over six innings – for another run in the sixth on a two-out RBI single by Francisco Lindor, then appeared in good shape to even the game in the seventh.
