Drummond averaged 16 points and 15 rebounds last season, and has a really good chance of developing into a guy that can average 20 and 20. In October, the Pistons passed on giving him an extension before the in-season deadline because waiting and keeping his cap hold on the books increased Detroit’s cap space, Van Gundy told ESPN. According to the Detroit Free Press, the Pistons have signed Ish Smith to a three-year contract.
The Pistons’ offense runs through Drummond’s pick-and-roll partnership with Reggie Jackson. It couldn’t be a more flawless time for Drummond, as the NBA’s salary cap has risen to $94 million.
Drummond is a physical force in the paint on both sides of the floor that makes Stan Van Gundy’s four-out system possible. His abysmal free throw percentage is a cause for concern going forward, however. Drummond shot free throws at a below 36% clip a year ago, making him literally one of the worst free throw shooters in National Basketball Association history.
The signing of Leuer means the Pistons are out of the Al Horford race.
Craig Grialou of Arizona Sports noted back in April that the 27-year-old Wisconsin product came away from the campaign pleased with his all-around play.
Detroit Pistons big man Andre Drummond now has a big contract, too. The Los Angeles Lakers were rumored to have interest in Bazemore – the same Bazemore that was on the team for a quick stretch during the ’13-14 season – and it appears they made a serious run at him.
Drummond doesn’t turn 23 until August, as he was a younger rookie than he had to be when he reclassified to begin his freshman season at UConn one season earlier.
