In the USA, the Anti-Defamation League and several Jewish community centres across the country got a round of bomb threats Tuesday, including five in New York City.
US federal authorities have been investigating a surge of threats against Jewish organizations. Institutions in at least eight states were effected today, following several waves of threats that have forced evacuations and sown fear in the community over the past few months.
“The call that came in threatened an explosive device that was lethal, and there was a time period given in which people were told they had to evacuate”, said Etzion Neuer, deputy director of the ADL’s NY office. The threats called into the ADL were among a slew of similar threats called into Jewish Community Centers in four different states on Tuesday morning, the latest in an uptick in threats that began in 2017.
“This is not the first time that ADL has been targeted, and it will not deter us in our efforts to combat anti-Semitism and hate against people of all races and religions”. This only hardens our resolve to fight ag #antisemitism.
In New York, Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said there were five threats made, including to the Anti-Defamation League, which also received threats to offices in Atlanta, Boston and Washington, D.C. and in Oregon, Wisconsin, Illinois, Florida, Maryland and Toronto.
“Oy vey, we coming to spray your synagogue with pig’s blood, the goyim”, the caller said.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday directed the state police to coordinate with federal and local law enforcement to investigate bomb threats against New York Jewish community centers in Rochester and Syracuse and the Anti- Defamation League headquarters in Manhattan.
In addition to violent threats, some Jewish organisations received harassing phone calls. It has 27 offices in the USA and one in Israel. “All threats are taken seriously, and I applaud our law enforcement professionals for their quick and effective response to ensure the safety of our citizens”.
