Boxing is on a hot streak.
After Canelo Alvarez worked over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. last night (Sat., May 6, 2017) live on HBO pay-per-view (PPV) from inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, it was announced that the Mexican champion will move up in weight yet again to challenge undefeated middleweight king Gennady Golovkin on September 16 live on HBO PPV.
Chavez Jr. later admitted he didn’t have the right game plan going into the fight, and didn’t represent Mexican boxing in the way he wanted to.
There’s no shying away from the political overtones ahead of the sold-out fight that’s billed as one of the biggest involving Mexican boxers. I’ve never feared anyone, since I was 16 fighting as a professional. Additionally, this fight will be fought at almost 10 pounds heavier (164.5) than any previous fight for Alvarez who typically fights at 155.
In a preliminary bout, Joseph Aguirre (17-0) of Mexico won a six-round unanimous decision over countryman Angel Aispuro in the lightweight division. “If I would’ve attacked more, I would’ve been open to counter punches”, said Chavez Jr.
Fans began to boo in the final few rounds, perhaps because of the fight’s one-sided nature. “And any time you have a fight between two Mexicans, it’s a guaranteed spectacular fight and brings out that extra in a fighter, and makes it that much tougher and guarantees the war”. “It can be a big boost to my career if I can win this fight”. The current WBO junior middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez went up in weight to face former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
Losing his middleweight title to Sergio Martinez in September 2012 was one thing. “And that guarantees that we can give the fans a great fight”. Both fighters weighed 164 on Friday, and both declined to be weighed on fight night. He’s guaranteed $5 million. In case you miss the fight then here we will update Canelo Alvarez vs Chavez Jr highlights video and results. I think if I land the right punch, I can knock him out.
Reaction to the fight announcement was inevitably enthusiastic.
As the two were side by side, after quickly shaking hands, Max Kellerman turned to Alvarez and asked him if this means the two of them will be fighting in September, Alvarez replied, “Yes sir, yes sir, it’s done”.
There was no title on the line Saturday as Alvarez moved up in weight to fight the much bigger Chavez at a catchweight of 164lbs.
After the battle Alvarez-Chavez came out to the ring king of the Middleweight Gennady Golovkin to officially confirm the fight with Soulem.
“Nacho really pushed Julio. It was very hard in the beginning getting used to this new regimen, but it’s something that I did”. Golden Boy Promotions will be presenting what will be one of the biggest events this year as HBO PPV will be live from the T-Mobile arena in Las Vegas. Alvarez is the better fighter and if Chavez does not hydrate to 175 or more, this could be a fair fight.
“On Saturday night, people are going to see firsthand this rivalry, how real it is”, he said.
