Apple AirPods Teardown Reveals Intricate Construction With Zero Chance Of Repairability

After spending $160 on a pair of Apple’s fancy, wireless AirPods the first thing most people would do is pair them and listen to some tunes. iFixit is not most people.

For those using Bluetooth headphones, a wireless headphone may not be a new concept. To accompany that direction, the AirPods were announced. It was supposed to be launched alongside the iPhone 7. That stem looks the most awkward, as it drops down conspicuously from your ear (one CNET reviewer referred to them as “hipster earrings”). Does it work? Is it practical? Some used then while doing light exercises like living room cardio exercises and yoga and they love its ideal fit.

For reference, the inside of a wired EarPod is mostly air.

Do other headphones have the W1 chip?

The W1 chip also has the ability to detect if the AirPod is in your ear or not. Apple says a voice accelerometer works with the microphones to make this possible, and it’s very well-implemented. You can also use them with any device that supports Bluetooth audio. It looks like you will have to just buy another pair.

In his recent hands-on review, DT’s audio specialist Caleb Denison rated Apple’s AirPods pretty highly, though he noted that there’s a good chance they could fall out “during rigorous or particularly sweaty workouts”. For me, that’s good enough. These are the best truly wireless earbuds I’ve used, but their limitations show the category still isn’t ready for prime time.

Owners of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus can not directly connect any headphones with a traditional 3.5mm plug. To check the battery, user can hold the AirPods next to an iPhone or ask Siri “How’s the battery on my AirPods?”

Unfortunately, finding that sweet spot to tap was sometimes harder than it should be.

There are no physical controls on the AirPods, so you have to use Siri for everything.

Using Siri for music playback is a different story.

When you take out only a single AirPod from an ear, the music is paused, put it back in and the music will resume, reports Re/code. While it continues to thrive in markets thanks to its lineup of hardware as well as service sector, the option of free one-day deliveries helps the company to further ramp up on its relations with loyal users.

Accessing any case component is impossible without destroying the outer casing. These “could be evidence of low quality standards, or a rushed product release“, the iFixit team says.

There is also a charging indicator in the AirPod case. I’m not anxious about sweat being an issue (I’ll update if I discover otherwise), but I do plan on keeping my really bad, no good corded Bluetooth earphones around for bad weather workouts. Headbanging, dancing, bending over, running up stairs, jogging, you name it.
