It’s something that no other phone manufacturer now offers, and of course, Apple advises against it, because it says everything it does is ultimately for the benefit of the end user. The update is expected to roll out to users in spring 2018 and comes in response to the recent scandal surrounding Apple intentionally slowing down iPhones due to battery wear. The company said it first assumed it was caused by a “normal, temporary” lag caused by a new operating system update, and small bugs in the iOS.
Apple has received a lot of flak over how it silently started to throttle the performance of iPhones with older batteries.
The update could also include a new menu that shows users information about their iPhone’s battery health.
Having your iPhone battery replaced should do the trick, according to Apple.
“We’re going to give people the visibility of the health of their battery so it’s very, very transparent“, he said during the interview. He finally explained the real reason for the update which was to prevent unexpected restarts in older phones and preserve battery. Cook, however, clarifies that they don’t recommend turning it off anyway because what they’re doing is ultimately for the benefit of the user. It rolled out a new battery replacement program, which brings down the repairing cost of old batteries from $79 to $29 for iPhone 6 or newer models. Apple’s apology didn’t help much either, with the company offering $30 battery replacements to make up for it.
Apple has already promised to provide more insight into battery life of the iPhones in future iOS updates. Like the rather good theory that Apple was secretly throttling the performance of phones to encourage users to upgrade to new phones. “Maybe we should have been clearer as well, and so we deeply apologize for anybody that thinks we had some kind of other motivation”, BGR reports.
Apple’s next iOS update will include feature that lets users disable power management feature that slowdown iPhone performance.
Without the throttling feature in place, Apple says, iPhones with ageing batteries could suffer from unexpected shutdowns.
