Apple iOS 11 takes a stand on driving safety with CarPlay updates

Apple’s WWDC 2017 kicked off yesterday where it introduced new hardware including new upgraded iMacs, MacBooks, a powerful iMac Pro, and the rumored Siri smart speaker now known as the HomePod. “We believe Apple remains among the most under-appreciated stocks in the world”.

“Apple reinvented portable music with iPod and now HomePod will reinvent how we enjoy music wirelessly throughout our homes“, said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing.

Apple, as always, has stressed its commitment to customer privacy.

Because, like so many of Apple’s best ideas, someone else thought of them first. What’s more, Apple has opened up Apple Music to developers, giving them full access to the 40 million songs in Apple’s cloud catalog.

Covered in what Apple calls “acoustic mesh”, the speaker is seven inches tall, sporting a four-inch woofer, six microphones and a beam-forming tweeter.

It also comes with a slot in which users can keep their Apple Pencil to prevent it from getting lost. It includes new features for watchfaces, such as a new Siri-based watchface.

Apple is pitching the HomePod as a music player above everything else, perhaps because Siri is perceived to be far weaker than Google’s Assistant and Amazon’s Echo intelligent assistants. “I’ll see your message when I get to where I’m going” text from Apple CarPlay. Interestingly, Apple’s new Files app for iOS 11 will let iPhone and iPads users easily manage their local files and other documents stored on Apple’s iCloud service, but it will also integrate with several third-party cloud storage solutions indluding Box, Dropbox, Google Drive and OneDrive. Apple though stopped short of any AR features that might be built into its own camera app but showcased how the feature can be used to place a virtual object in a real world setting.
