Crean spent nine years with the Hoosiers and went 166-135. His brother, Sean, starred at Pittsburgh and has developed into one of the country’s top coaches at Arizona. “The ability to unite a fan base is productivity is what it comes down to”.
“He’s the only person I met face-to-face with”, Glass said.
” If new head coach Archie Miller brings his most recent experience to IN, that’s exactly what’ll happen”. Glass obviously understood the objective: If there is any fan base that can embrace a basketball coach merely for being a coach, it is located in the state where Norman Dale, however fictional he is, became an icon.
“We have to become a tough-minded group because to win at the level that we want to win at, you have to be able to beat different styles”, Miller said.
“We have to start inside the state of IN, and the way we do that is moving outside very slowly”, Miller says.
“The inside-out approach means that we have to dedicate ourselves to the high school coaches in the state, and they must feel like they’re being dominated by Indiana University”, Miller said.
Archie Miller will no longer be forced to spend each March shooting down speculation and rumors of jobs he’d never take.
Now Miller has to live among those die-hards.
“I don’t think you come to IN if you don’t want to live IN the neighborhood”, Miller said about the expectations during his introductory press conference Monday. “I felt like we had an incredible conversation on all levels”. I’ve been with great people.
“When we lost to Xavier, we got back to the hotel and I was sort of in shock”, John said, via Tom Archdeacon of the Dayton Daily News.
There were two thundering ovations from a large crowd estimated at more than 1,000 fans assembled Monday afternoon at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.
Xavier head coach Chris Mack had been rumored as a possible replacement for Indiana’s Tom Crean after Crean was dismissed last Thursday.
Nevertheless, Archie Miller is everything IN could have hoped for. Even when his alma mater, N.C. State, opened up earlier this year, Miller’s name was immediately cast aside as a reach candidate for the Wolfpack.
Marquette is plenty of distance up the college-basketball ladder from Dayton, but it was Crean, too, who made a career leap to the Hoosiers nearly a decade ago.
It’s win – and win now.
“We have to start inside this state of IN, we have to start moving outside very slowly”, Miller said.
Miller said he wants to use an inside-out approach for his recruiting, prioritizing in-state talent then gradually working outward. It’s why they ran Crean out of town despite Crean making something of the rubble Sampson left and advancing to three Sweet 16s in the four seasons prior to this last one. But the $7.8 million buyout and Alford’s pedestrian postseason record-including no Sweet 16 appearances in eight seasons at Iowa-made him more of a fit in sentiment than reality.
Miller, through his comments, made it clear just how important his new “family” of players is going to be.
What happened instead was that Miller nervously adjusted the microphone a bit, the only hint that revealed the very big task he was taking upon himself, and then proceeded to have a quiet conversation with Hoosier Nation.
“The expectations are set high”, Miller said, “and they’re achievable”.
