Trump declared in the aftermath of the Republican’s failed health-care push that the ultra-conservative group is hurting the entire GOP agenda. I think that we’re trying to also let Republicans know if we pass something bad, if insurance rates are going up at 20 percent, 25 percent a year from now after Republicans have taken ownership of health care, that won’t be good for the party.
The Wisconsin Republican says he is pushing lawmakers to keep talking and try to reach a consensus on a health bill that could pass – but he declined to commit to another vote, saying he does not want to impose an “artificial timeline”. I guess the message today is ‘we need to fight against Freedom Caucus members and Democrats.’ That’s a conflicted message.
The debate over the Republican Party’s ObamaCare replacement highlighted the rift between President Trump and the House Freedom Caucus.
Buck’s a member of the Freedom Caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Asked whether Trump’s tweet furthers the perception that it was the Freedom Caucus that stood in the way, Ayres replied, “That simply added more fuel to the fire”.
But keeping Freedom Caucus members happy without losing the votes of Republican moderates has proven tough. Mark Meadows, Jim Jordan and Raul Labrador, saying they needed to “get on board” for “both great health care and massive tax cuts and reform”. However impossible-sounding, it’s increasingly becoming one of the most viable routes for the upper chamber of Congress.
Republicans, however, were most likely to blame Democrats in the House.
Trump initially focused the blame for the failure on Democrats and predicted a dire future for the current law.
Trump’s missives come as his administration faces unprecedented pressure from all sides, ranging from leaks about a White House riven by internal conflicts and intrigue to increased scrutiny of alleged ties between Trump loyalists and Russian state actors.
Their tactics on health care prompted yet another call for party unity this week from House Speaker Paul Ryan. “Their point was that this approach might work in New Jersey, but it probably doesn’t work so well in SC”.
The Wisconsin Republican said he hopes that Republicans can come together and figure out a solution to repealing the Affordable Care Act.
Senator John McCain, who ran for president in 2008 and was defeated by Barack Obama, said that if he was sitting in the White House now, he would try to ease intraparty tensions rather than stoking them. But his enemy was allegedly the same establishment opposed by … the House Freedom Caucus, which is made up of the most conservative legislators in the last century.
After the defeat, the White House announced that it will be moving on from repeal, and ObamaCare will remain the law of the land despite Republican majorities in both houses of Congress.
It wasn’t clear how relevant the caucus would be with a Republican in the White House. That comment drew sharp criticism Republican Sen.
“This is a can-do president, who’s a business guy, and he wants to get things done”, Ryan said.
