Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai said his agency is investigating an AT&T outage affecting the ability for customers to call 911.
“AT&T is experiencing a nationwide outage which is affecting 911 calls”, authorities in Washingtonsaid in an email alert.
That option was still working Wednesday night.
The spokesperson did not offer details on the extent of the issue or how many customers were affected.
The issue, first reported in the area around 7 p.m.to Eddy County Emergency Management, prevented some calls to 911 from connecting. A few minutes later, the company tweeted that service had been restored for all customers.
Officials say they are unable to call 911 from their cellphone.
Several carriers agreed to settlements after an April 2014 outage that affected 11 million telephone users.
“This may be a nationwide issue”, Acevedo tweeted.
Police will release more information as it becomes available.
