Serena Williams provided another reminder of her dominance in women’s tennis with a 6-0, 6-4 win in the Australian Open semifinals against Agnieszka Radwanska, who is soon to move to the No. 3 ranking.
Williams made her first attempt at 22 at last year’s U.S. Open, falling short as she fell to Roberta Vinci in the semi-final.
Johanna Konta missed out on reaching a maiden grand slam final after being defeated in straight sets by Angelique Kerber in the semi-final at the Australian Open in Melbourne.
The dominant world No1 surged into her 26th Major final by dismantling Polish fourth-seed Agnieszka Radwanska 6-0 6-4 at the Australian Open.
She added: “I played against a better player today who earned her right into a Grand Slam final”.
The power-packed left-hander enters Saturday night’s Australian Open final standing in the way of Williams equalling Steffi Graf’s record of 22 Open-era grand slam singles titles.
“It’s a really special moment to reach the final for the first time”, Kerber said.
“I’m pretty much the female version of Jason Bourne”, Konta said Wednesday, making a rare analogy to “The Bourne Identity” at an Australian Open news conference, where she has spent the past 2 weeks increasing her profile in the tennis world. Raonic is aiming to advance to his first Grand Slam final after losing in the semifinal at Wimbledon in 2014 in his only previous final-four match. Both times I was looking forward to going home to see my family.
Williams says “yeah, definitely…” I know that she brings a lot, you know, to the game. She taught me to believe in myself.
Speaking more about Konta’s chances, Barker said that “Konta has got all the shots”, before talking about how good Konta’s serve is and how much of a weapon her forehand has become.
“She’s a tough opponent and she will win many tournaments in the future for sure”.
Since then, she has not finished the year outside of the top-10 and last year won four tournaments, all on different surfaces – the first time any woman has achieved tournament victories on red clay, green clay, grass and a hard court on the WTA Tour since 2007. “I saw the match today against Aga”.
Asked after she beat Johanna Konta in the semifinals if she would seek out Graf’s advice, Kerber laughed and said, “Steffi, write me please”.
“She goes on court and she just wants to kill it”, Radwanska said.
Serena Williams was a force to be reckoned with as she finally tasted victory on Thursday.
Williams’ win over fourth-seeded Radwanska provided another yet reminder of her dominance in the women’s game.
“When she plays like she did in the first set, I think she is unbeatable”, Tomasz Wiktorowski told CNN. He’s the only guy that has been able to stop me as of late. “I think I showed everybody that I deserve it. That’s a good feeling”.
She set her stall out in the very first point as she thundered back Radwanska’s first serve before two more booming returns sealed an early break.
“I didn’t really think about it”, Radwanska said.
Konta threatened to get back in the contest in the fifth game but again her racquet let her down from the baseline, a netted backhand gifting Kerber a 4-1 lead.
