The 17-year-old found a package outside his house in a tree-lined, mixed race residential area and brought it into the kitchen, where it exploded, Manley said.
The second explosion on Monday happened while police were wrapping up a press conference for the Oldfort Hill explosion.
In the awake of the explosions, Texas governor’s office is offering a reward of up to 15,000 us dollars for any information that leads to the arrest or identification of those involved.
A woman in her 40s was in the home and injured by the blast, although she was expected to survive, police said.
One woman in her 70s was transported to the hospital following the incident with serious, potentially life-threatening injuries, according to Austin-Travis County EMS. The police have not said there is a connection. Neither the Postal Service nor private carriers such as UPS or FedEx have any record of delivering the package to the home where Monday’s explosion occurred.
His death remained under investigation at the time of the two blasts Monday, but officials had previously said that they did not think the public was at risk.
The FBI and the ATF are also investigating. The Austin Police Department said officers will respond to any suspicious package call.
Sheriff AJ Louderback on the bombings that occurred in Austin neighborhoods and what law enforcement plans to do to stop the next explosion. “She picked up the package, and at that point, the explosion, the box detonated”, Manley said.
All residents of Austin should be careful about packages, Manley said.
The victims of the first two bombings were black, raising fears that they had been targeted due to their race.
Manley said investigators have figured out what the first device was, but they’re withholding some details “to protect the integrity of the investigation”. They said House had a wife and a young daughter they sometimes saw together. A few hours later, about five miles south, a 75-year-old woman found a similar package on her porch.
“These devices can explode in many ways, either by being moved or being opened”, Manley said, also cautioning that the bombs “can be hidden in many different ways”.
“It sounded like a cannon”, Kenneth Thompson, who lives across the street from House, said of the explosion. “They’re a very good family, so it’s just a shock to have something like this happen”.
“I’m scared for everyone’s safety”, she told the American-Statesman in Spanish.
“Based on evidence that we have at this scene, as well as at the other two scenes where we’ve had these explosions, this evidence makes us believe that these incidents are related“, he told reporters. “They have, to our knowledge, evacuated”, a dispatcher was heard saying earlier Monday.
“We are praying and thinking of her through her recovery in this incident”, Manley said.
