The man accused of a terrifying attack on two European backpackers at a remote South Australian beach had been searching for love online, describing himself on a dating website as being respectful to women and seeking a “future wife”.

A 59-year-old man has been accused of kidnapping and attempting to murder two young backpackers on a deserted beach, it’s reported.

A 59-year-old man has been charged with a string of offences including unlawful sexual intercourse and attempted murder.

The two worldwide backpackers, aged in their 20s, were discovered by local fisherman near Salt Creek, in Coorong National Park, just before 6.30pm on Tuesday.

The women are said to have befriended their attacker the previous day, en route from Adelaide to Victoria, before camping out in the deserted national park overnight.

Police told media this afternoon the women and the man were “newly acquainted” and their information suggested the three were travelling interstate when they found themselves in “a situation which turned out to be rather scary and physically bad for them'”.

The women, one of whom suffered a serious head injury, were taken by helicopter to hospital. Police say at least one of the victims had been tied up. “She’s going, “Someone’s out there, he’s going to kill us, get out of here, please get out of here”, one of the fishermen, Ali Mohammed, said.

The women were transported to an Adelaide medical center with serious injuries and remained in a stable condition Wednesday morning, the police statement said. He said the woman was “screaming” and “not in a good way”.

“[She said] her and her friend split up, started running [in] different directions … and she got away”, Mr Mohammed said.

Police are now trying to find overseas relatives of the victims.

The fishermen immediately contacted Salt Creek roadhouse, and police and paramedics were called.
