Bangladesh eye series triumph after maiden Australia win

This was Bangladesh’s first-ever Test victory against Australia.

David Warner’s 112 gave Australia genuine hope of taking a 1-0 lead in the two-match series, but he was pinned lbw by Shakib to start the tourists’ demise from 158-2 to 199-8.

In the second innings, Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal, who became the highest Test scorer for Bangladesh, blasted 78 runs setting a 265-run target for Australia.

One notable difference between Australia’s campaigns in India and Bangladesh has been their relative lack of preparation for this tour. West Indies (twice), England and Sri Lanka are the other sides they have won against. “Credit to Bangladesh“, Steve Smith said.

Bangladesh scripted a historic win over Australia in the opening Test in Dhaka to underline their growing stature in world cricket. “They bowled quite well to their credit, their spinners were really accurate, it was quite tough out there at times and you just have to wait for a bad ball and something you can capitalize on”. “We had that confidence and the belief came from the last two to three years. not many have been watching us but we were quietly doing our job”.

Warner survived a review before bringing up his 19th Test century, a second in Asia, although he was eventually trapped by Shakib, who had Smith caught behind four overs later.

The hosts played splendidly to win their maiden Test over Australia.

The 26-year-old went wicketless in the current first Test at the Shere Bangla National Stadium and was into his second over on Tuesday when he sustained the injury and walked off of the ground.

In addition to his 10 wickets, Shakib had chipped in with a vital 84 which saw Bangladesh change the course of the game. “It’s disappointing. I think we probably let ourselves down in the first innings with the bat”, Smith said. At Mirpur on Wednesday, the Tigers showed not only their talent but also their nerves that they wanted nothing less than a Test victory.

Steve O’Keefe has been recalled to the Australian Test squad.

“I think we made a few errors, a few guys getting out ways we’ve got out before and not learning from mistakes”.

Australia, which resumed the day on a precarious 18 for three, was bowled out early in the final session for 217 to hand the host a 43-run first-innings lead.
