Bernie Sanders of Vermont, according a report in the New York Times.
The debate begins at 7 p.m. Arizona time (9 p.m. Eastern).
The fourth debate is set to be held in Charleston, South Carolina.
Clinton hopes to use the 9 p.m. ET debate in SC on NBC to press home her argument that she is the most electable Democrat, alone has the experience required of a commander-in-chief and is more likely to beat a Republican in the general election.
The gun debate may have special resonance in Charleston following the outpouring of grief triggered when a self-proclaimed white supremacist killed nine African-Americans at a Bible study meeting at the city’s Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church a year ago.
Sanders has pulled even with Clinton in recent polls in other early states, but he has had less success connecting with blacks in SC, the dominant Democratic bloc here. “We’ll just get you the doctor’s note”.
Schiff has endorsed Clinton and is supporting her bid for the Democratic nomination.
So Clinton is now faced with the possibility that she could lose both of the first two states to vote – something that would be hugely embarrassing for the supposedly inevitable Democratic nominee.
Clinton advisers and allies told the Times, on condition of anonymity, that the candidate and her husband are so alarmed by the momentum Sanders has gathered that they are questioning their data and polling teams’ voter-turnout models and analysis, wondering whether the support they’re counting on will really show up in Iowa Feb. 1.
He added, “Let me be very clear with you: Bernie is in excellent health”.
Another topic that will surely be discussed is electability.
With the Iowa caucuses a couple of weeks away, there are few levers Clinton’s campaign can pull to slow Sanders down.
Finally, there’s the core issue motivating Sanders’s campaign and indeed his entire political career – his desire to check the power of the superwealthy and corporations.
Over the past several months, Sanders has repeatedly said he’d revisit his 2005 vote for the PLCAA, which protects gun manufacturers from most lawsuits created to hold them liable for gun deaths.
After enjoying nearly two years as the front-runner in the Democratic nomination race, Clinton now finds herself neck and neck with Sanders in Iowa. So expect a serious debate around whether Clinton is too close to the wealthy.
Currently, we can only wait for this weekend debate and see which one of the candidates manages to improve their current standings. Vox’s Matthew Yglesias has argued that O’Malley should be taken more seriously – so this may be the last chance for that to happen.
