On Saturday night, the Democrats debated in New Hampshire, but the candidates weren’t just competing with each other-they were also going up against the Dallas Cowboys NFL game and the new “Star Wars” movie that’s taking the nation by storm.
Martin O’Malley is a footnote, and Bernie Sanders is viewed by most rank-and-file Democrats as unelectable – not just because the word “socialist” freaks out the electorate, but because his unremittingly domestic focus is ill-suited for a campaign season dominated by national security issues and heightened terror concerns.
The campaign fired its data director this week after finding that he improperly accessed Clinton’s files in a voter database owned by the Democratic National Committee and managed by an outside vendor.
Still, while it appears O’Malley’s campaign is going nowhere, and Sanders has stalled, and it will be humanly hard to vote for Clinton, none of the three Democratic candidates is what you would call scary.
Mrs. Clinton, the former secretary of state, accused Trump of undermining the fight against terrorism, as she sought to frame next year’s election as a choice between her cleareyed approach to national security and the recklessness of Republicans who have demonized Muslims since the recent attacks on Paris and San Bernardino, California.
To that end, Sanders declared, “I believe that countries like Saudi Arabia and Qatar have got to step up to the plate, have got to contribute the money that we need, and the troops that we need, to destroy ISIS with American support”. The average American may not be watching, but Republicans who are reconciling themselves to Donald Trump or Ted Cruz would be wise to heed her. But, that bluster is not insignificant and I fear that many of us would have trouble sleeping at night if Trump or Cruz or Rubio were to win the presidency. He is becoming Isis’ best recruiter.
On Sunday, DNC spokesman Eric Walker said the Democratic debates had been scheduled in a similar fashion to those of the Republicans: with debates on broadcast television being held on the weekends and those on cable being held during the week.
“We now finally are where we need to be”, she said of the fight against Islamic State. Not only that, but Sanders reached two million faster than President Obama reached one.
Bernie Sanders speaks with Hillary Clinton during a break at the third Democratic presidential debate Saturday night at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, N.H. “Thank you, goodnight, and may the force be with you”, she said.
“So what I say to those people who go to Donald Trump’s rallies, understand: He thinks a low minimum wage in America is a good idea”, Mr. Sanders said.
If Saturday’s debate was supposed to be the vehicle for Sanders to change the dynamic, it probably did not. “Even the smallest things can be capitalized on as an ‘I told you so'”.
She pledged that as president, she wouldn’t raise taxes on families making $250,000 or less per year. The Democratic debates – two of which have been broadcast on the networks – have drawn less than half as many viewers as the Republican events.
Sanders has accused Clinton of being too cozy with Wall Street and running a campaign funded by wealthy executives, charges she has rejected.
