‘Black Panther’ director Ryan Coogler pens emotional thank-you to fans

The film has many interesting ideas.

Black Panther is tearing up the box office and generating mountains of hype, and rightfully so. Its estimated three-day gross was $192 million domestically, the highest debut ever recorded in history for a February film. About 520 students will board buses this week as part of a field trip to a Detroit-area theater, school officials said. He is also set to appear in Avengers: Infinity War.

Speaking with Empire Film Podcast, Coogler confessed that seeing T’Challa take the stage among the rest of the world’s powers was how he wanted to leave Black Panther.

The record-breaking numbers are also starting to raise hopes of opening the doors for more films with a primarily African American cast. And while Marvel’s other black superheroes are confined to smaller screens or sidekick status- Luke Cage on Netflix and Falcon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – Black Panther gets to be seen on an epic scale.

Reviews for Black Panther have been nearly uniformly ecstatic.

Black Panther is now tearing up the Box Office, taking in an incredible $202 Million over the three day weekend in North America and over $400 Million Worldwide. Bringing the movie’s four-day holiday total to $241.9 million.

Though small, analysts say there’s potential for growth in the African box office, driven by the rising middle class in some African countries.

Still need a reason to (pay for a ticket) and see “Black Panther“?

“Something very special is happening here”, said Joycelyn Jackson, director of the Black Student Union for Albuquerque Public Schools, the educator who helped Thompson get into the Albuquerque screening. Shuri is actually a relatively recent addition to Black Panther’s supporting cast, as he didn’t always have a sister!

One person who he might not choose to thank, however, is a movie goer who went against the grain and said something less than positive about the movie.

That enthusiasm goes well beyond the African continent. This past weekend was also the third largest weekend overall with the top twelve delivering a combined $270.9 million, of which Black Panther accounted for almost 75%. “For every Angola and Kenya, there’s also a Bulgaria and an Israel”.

Black Panther, named for the first Black comic book superhero (created in 1966 by Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby) is the 18th film to be spawned from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

The film is expected to continue to post powerful numbers in the US and Canada this weekend. By Sunday, Disney was reporting that actual ticket sales for the long weekend will be closer to $218 million-and that’s just in North America. Deadpool delivered a 2.74x multiplier after opening over the same weekend in 2016, which when applied to Black Panther’s opening, translates to a domestic run over $550 million.
