British PM May faces mounting criticism over London tower block blaze

The confirmed death toll from the Grenfell Tower fire in London has risen to 30, with 12 people still in a critical condition in hospital, police said.

“How many children died?”

“You can see the anger of the community, justifiably so”, he said.

“There will be many questions about this whole incident and so you will appreciate that it would not be appropriate for us to comment or for others to speculate on any aspect of fire, or it causes, in advance of these inquiries”, managing director Ray Bailey said.

The council said 110 households had been given temporary accommodation by Friday morning, and added that it was working to find more permanent homes.

Mrs May, who made a brief, private visit to the scene earlier, said: “The emergency services told me that the way this fire spread and took hold of the building was rapid, it was ferocious, it was unexpected”.

Yesterday, the first victim of the fire was named as 23- year-old Syrian refugee Mohammed Alhajali.

“Mohammed undertook a unsafe journey to flee war and death in Syria, only to meet it here in the United Kingdom, in his own home”, the Syrian Solidarity Campaign said in a statement.

The death toll is expected to rise further as rescue workers continue to search for victims – an operation that Metropolitan Police Commander Stuart Cundy described as “extremely challenging”.

He said later: “We must and will do everything in our power to ensure the truth about this tragedy comes out”.

It is a public housing unit in the North Kensington neighborhood of London – one of the British capital’s most affluent areas. The group previous year completed a 10 million pound ($12.8 million) renovation that included new outside insulating panels, double-glazed windows and a communal heating system. I feel very angry that it was possible for the fire to spread in the way it did.

Hundreds of people were believed to be inside Grenfell Tower when the fire began.

The official fire service advice for residents to stay in their homes and use towels to block out smoke while awaiting help has also come under scrutiny.

Corbyn met with members of the public and was pictured hugging tearful relatives of victims near the charred building.

Prime Minster May is already under pressure after a series of terrorist attacks and political setbacks in the election last week.

Armed with signs stamped with “JUSTICE FOR GRENFELL” and “NEVER AGAIN”, protesters took to the streets of London on Friday afternoon to call for justice for the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire.

Former cabinet minister Michael Portillo said that decision amounted to a lack of “humanity”. Police say 24 injured people remain at the hospital.

The Queen and Duke of Cambridge went to temporary relief centres where they met volunteers and residents who had lost everything.
