Brock Osweiler, the Broncos’ former quarterback of the future who was drafted in 2012, will return to Denver as a Houston Texan and face his former fellow backup, Trevor Siemian, a seventh-round pick in 2015 who was given the keys to the Broncos’ offense after Osweiler’s defection during the offseason.
The Texans rank second in the National Football League by allowing just 189.3 yards passing a game and have remained solid in that area despite an onslaught of recent injuries.
But consecutive losses to the Falcons at home and the Chargers on the road in a five-day span wiped a bit of the shine off the Broncos (4-2).
Point spread: The Broncos opened as 6.5-point favorites; the total was 41.5 early in the week, according to sportsbooks monitored by Odds Shark (line updates and matchup report).
Osweiler went 5-2 as a starter for the Broncos before being replaced by Peyton Manning for the postseason.
The Colts held San Diego to just 37 rushing yards in a Week 3 victory, but every other opponent has gone well over the 100-yard mark.
The Texans might as well have been playing on seething coals by the second half of a awful start to the division game. Offensively we’ve been really struggling up front. From a technical standpoint the Broncos could stand to do a better job of running the ball, something they did with expertise while beating the Panthers and Colts to open the season. He tried to downplay it, but he couldn’t resist mentioning that winning two games in a row had never happened in his time here. If they don’t fix these things, they could end up with their first three-game losing streak since Tim Tebow was their QB in 2010.
“I think there are going to be lot of boos from fans but that’s what fans do”, says Bradley Roby. “It’s a collective thing. You look at their defense, that’s what we’re concentrating on the most from an offensive standpoint”. It was the hardest decision because I have nothing but gratitude, love, respect and appreciation for not only the organization, but the fan base and the entire city of Denver.
Osweiler has thrown two touchdown passes in three of the Texans’ four wins this season, including a pair of second-half scores in Houston’s 26-23 comeback win over the Indianapolis Colts last weekend.
Osweiler’s departure 48 hours after Manning’s retirement sent Elway and Gary Kubiak on a six-month search for Manning’s successor.
Houston – which scored its first touchdown of the fourth quarter with 2:34 to play – became the first team to overcome a 14-point deficit with less than three minutes to play since the Tim Tebow-led Broncos did it at Miami in 2011.
On Monday night’s Horseplay, RTV6’s Dave Furst, Michael Grady and Brad Brown discussed the Colts’ loss and the team’s inability to put the Texans away late in the game. We disagree and we need your help to prove them wrong. He did that quite a few times. No amount of deflection will change that.
“The emotions can take you out of a game”, Osweiler said. “Whichever decision you make – if you’re my quarterback or if you’re not – if you’re not, you know what I have to do”.
But if CBS Houston offers me $72 million, I think I’ll go cover the Texans next year.
