Bus driver was speeding before deadly crash at DIA

Eighteen Legacy High School athletes and coaches were injured and one killed after the school bus they were traveling in crashed at the Denver International Airport (DIA), according to the Denver Channel.

The bus veered off a roadway and crashed into a concrete wall, killing the driver and injuring several passengers, The Denver Post reported.

At least 18 people were being treated for their injuries at nearby hospitals, Adams 12 Five Star said.

Jeff Tjornehoj, treasurer of the Legacy High School Football Boosters, told NBC affiliate KUSA that the bus was carrying players from Legacy, in Broomfield, north of Denver. The bus was one of three Adams 12 school buses that picked up Legacy students after they returned home from an out-of-state football game. Police were interviewing the football players about the crash.

The school bus was transporting 20 children to Kathleen High School. The students have been released.

When emergency responders arrived at the scene, they immediately transported the surviving victims to area hospitals.

Joe Ferdani, a spokesman with the Adams 12 school district, on Sunday night said he did not have more specific information on the coaches’ injuries.

The decision was made “through a collaborative discussion with district and school leadership, football staff, parents and students”, school officials stated Tuesday.

Neither the cause of the crash nor the name of the female driver was released. He said he did not know how many were students and how many were adults.

School officials told the newspaper that some of this week’s homecoming events were being postponed, including a “Powderpuff” football game that was planned for Monday evening.
