Democrats have been fearing that the party will not be able to unify behind the nominee if the DNC chair keeps her seat due to her criticism of the Bernie Sanders campaign following the chaotic Nevada State Convention.

The Bernie Sanders campaign has been warring with Wasserman-Schultz, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) chair.

Some Democratic senators interviewed by the Hill said Wasserman Schultz has become too toxic a figure to gavel in the DNC – where Democrats will look to unite Sanders supporters behind Hillary Clinton, who is close to clinching the nomination. Since Clinton announced her 2016 campaign, Wasserman Schultz has repeatedly claimed her nonbias in the election.

Wasserman Schultz recently condemned Sanders for what she believed was an inadequate response to “chaos” at the party’s Nevada convention held earlier in May.

Ousting Wasserman Schultz would be a significant step in the right direction, though establishment Democrats can’t expect that this small token will be all it takes to appease Sanders supporters.

Sen. Chuck Schumer of NY, expected to ascend to the Democratic leader role next year, declined to comment and said he won’t be “mixing it up” on the contentious issue. Sen.

Wasserman Schultz told reporters Wednesday that she is focused on the fall campaign.

Wasserman Schultz has also lost the support of liberal groups that support Sanders, including Credo, Moveon.org and RootsAction. “It is being discussed quietly among Democratic senators on the floor, in the cloakroom and in lunches”, the source told CNN. Sanders, I-Vt., in his bid to defeat Hillary Clinton, the front-runner in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination, could lead to tensions at this summer’s convention.

“The real story is you have a bunch of notable U.S. Senators and Members of Congress on the record expressing support for the strong leadership Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz has provided at the party, and an anonymous source who disagrees”, Miranda said.

Wasserman Schultz was a rising star from a swing state when President Barack Obama selected her for the chairwoman post in 2011.

“It is something the caucus has discussed”, another senior Senate Democratic aide said Tuesday on condition of anonymity to speak candidly about private discussions. Sanders’ team insisted their candidate condemns any kind of threats and accused the DNC chair of “throwing shade” at his campaign.

On Sunday, Sanders told CNN that he plans to endorse Wasserman Schultz’s opponent Tim Canova in Florida’s 23rd congressional district.
