Cam Newton: ‘I’m an African American QB that scares people’

Panthers coach Ron Rivera doesn’t believe Newton should have to fight perceptions about race. “Want and need are two different words, and that’s what I used in that text, along with other explicit words before the ‘need.’ And I think he got the feeling from that”. I always knew how to play football growing up. “I think that is what drives him, to be able to transcend those boundaries, which I think is great”.

“People should be scared of a quarterback with his skill set, because that’s who he is”, Rivera said.

The 26-year-old also said he understands that no matter what he does and what he accomplishes, people will formulate reasons to criticize him.
