Cam Newton’s spectacular season has earned him The Associated Press NFL Offensive Player of the Year award.
The victory for Newton, the first Panther to win the award, was announced Saturday night during NFL Honors.
With the Panthers remaining undefeated until Week 16, Newton managed to put up massive numbers, passing for 35 touchdowns (and throwing just 10 interceptions) and rushing for another 10 scores. He threw for 3,837 yards and rushed for another 636 yards.
Watt’s superb fifth pro season for the AFC South champions included a league-high 17 1-2 sacks, eight passes defensed, three forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, and general dominance. His 99.4 passer rating ranked sixth in the NFL. Steelers receiver Antonio Brown was next with 10 votes.
Newton wasn’t at the show this year, as he’s preparing for the Super Bowl against the Broncos on Sunday. “Being all the way in San Jose and San Francisco being up the road, it is a little bit of a hassle”.
