Campaign stop latest bump in rocky Ryan-Trump relationship

Trump’s comments were made in a 2005 video obtained and released Friday by The Washington Post and NBC News. He says both Donald Trump’s and Hillary Clinton’s campaigns are “doing what they should be doing, which is get their staffs out of harm’s way and suspend activities” until the storm clears south Florida. Ryan showed his support recently, complimenting Trump’s performance at the first presidential debate and refusing to admonish the billionaire for his feud with former Miss America Alicia Machado.

That incident stunned Republicans, particularly given Trump’s desperate need to shore up support among women.

Republican members of Congress are anxious that Trump’s campaign could ruin their chances of holding their majorities in the House and Senate in November and inflict long-term damage on the party.

Reid said in a statement Thursday that “if Donald Trump wants to come down from the penthouse his daddy bought him to lecture us on how to say Nevada, he could at least pronounce it correctly”. Recent revelations of Trump’s predatory sexual comments about women deepened the worries among GOP officials who fear he’ll drag down their own electoral prospects in November.

On Friday, one Senate Republican after another condemned Trump, though no one yet has pulled their endorsements.

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., one of Trump’s former rivals for the GOP nomination, also voiced his condemnation of Trump’s 2005 remarks.

“The last 72 hours has framed what this election is all about”.

Apparently a recording of Trump saying “p*ssy” was more of an incentive for McCain to back out than Trump’s statement to a large crowd in Iowa in 2015: “He’s not a war hero. He’s a war hero because he was captured.I like people that weren’t captured”. “That’s why I think we can have success in Wisconsin”. “It was a long time ago”.

The two men have had an uncomfortable relationship, with Ryan initially reluctant to endorse Trump before coming around.

That’s a pretty eclectic group, reflecting Ryan’s relative popularity statewide (50% of Wisconsin voters view him favorably, 32% unfavorably), and his relative strength (for a Republican) with moderates, independents and women.

And when it was revealed that Trump may not have paid 18 years worth of federal income taxes, Ryan brushed it off.

Walden told lawmakers they still could win their seats, but that it would require delicate maneuvering akin to landing an airplane in a hurricane in a fog, several participants said.

He boasted that “when you’re a star they let you do it”.

But GOP congressional leaders who have endorsed Trump or said they would vote for them, while strongly condeming the newly disclosed remarks, stopped short of rescinding their support. Such a move would leave Trump with virtually no political infrastructure in swing states to identify his supporters and ensure they vote. And Trump quickly attempted to pivot, criticizing Bill and Hillary Clinton in the video and suggesting he would take that argument to Sunday’s debate. “I’m just not ready to do that at this point”.

It is extremely rare for a House Speaker to turn his back on his party’s presidential nominee. “In the conference call with Ryan, California Rep. Dana Rohrabacher called GOP leaders cowards”, according to one participant, who like others, insisted on anonymity in order to describe the private discussions.

In recent weeks, House Speaker Paul Ryan has learned to deal with Donald Trump.

12% are anti-Trump Republicans.

“There is no accountability for Donald Trump in the – in the ridiculous and sexist things that he has said and racist things that he has said over the past few years”, she said on ABC’s “This Week”.

Trump made the threat in Sunday’s debate, after Clinton said it’s good that someone with Trump’s temperament isn’t president. But he leveled several charges against Clinton that will likely energize his supporters, including saying she should have been criminally charged for her controversial email practices at the State Department. He denied he had kissed and groped women without their consent, dismissing his claims that he had as “locker room” talk.
