Around 30 people including children have been treated after being hit with pepper spray at a refugee welcome event in Canada Friday.
In a statement posted on Facebook, the Syrian Canadian Council of BC said it considers the incident “an isolated act” that doesn’t reflect Canadian values, ethics and culture.
While the motive for the pepper spray attack remains “unknown”, Fincham says until police determine otherwise, they are treating the case a hate motivated crime.
“We were just standing outside and we all just started coughing and our eyes were burning”.
Call from across the country are condemning an alleged attack on Syrian refugees last night in Vancouver.
Addo, a 16-year-old of Syrian background who grew up in Canada, said she doesn’t want to assume the worst.
“Stop asking us to apologize for the terrorists, please, because we are their first victims”, Osama Siblani, publisher of The Arab American News, said at a press conference.
According to CBC News, as many as 30 people were treated for exposure to the chemical, including many women and young children.
Police are now looking for a suspect who wore a white hoodie and rode a bicycle during the attack.
Canada’s recently elected Liberal government campaigned on a promise to accept 25,000 Syrian refugees by the end of 2015.
No one is under arrest and the investigation continues.
