Clinton voters have been frantically searching for an escape to Australia and New Zealand in the hours since Donald Trump won the presidential election.
The search term “moving to Canada” spiked at the stroke of midnight on November 9, and again at 4 a.m. EST, according to Google Trends, but data shows both Americans and Canadians were looking up the topic.
Bonnie Quinn, a New Jersey insurance underwriter planning to move to Canada with her husband said she felt “just downright embarrassed” by the election results. “But I would say that a lot of people might get to the consultation stage, but really in a sense, it’s just people who are just researching their options”.
WE co-founder Marc Kielburger told the crowd that Trump’s election means the role that Canadians play in the world has never been more important. “He also knows the government of Canada was 100-per-cent opposed to him”.
Most analysts predict a drop in trade if Trump follows through with protectionist measures, with Desjardins Bank in Montreal last week predicting a recession in Canada if the U.S. withdraws from NAFTA.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Wednesday he looked forward to working with Donald Trump after the businessman won the USA presidency in a victory that could hurt Canada’s exporters and wreck plans to impose a national carbon price.
“We’re ready to come to the table”, he said.
“If the president-elect wants to have a discussion about improving NAFTA … we’re happy to do so”, he said. While some in Canada will see this is a positive economic development other Canadians will certainly be in opposition.
There are few industries where the economies of the two countries are tied together closer than the auto sector. Cars made in Canada often contain parts made in the United States, and vice-versa. Perhaps one with Mexico and one with Canada.
Trump was a constant critic of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation throughout the election campaign, saying the military alliance was full of “free riders”.
