Carson, the former GOP presidential candidate, has no experience in housing, but as a strong supporter of Donald Trump, he has the valuable ear of the White House.

FESSLER: Warren tried several times without success to get a more direct answer, but Carson did promise later in the hearing that he would report back to the committee if he comes across any potential conflicts of interest involving the president or his family.

Carson did not read from prepared remarks during Thursday’s hearing – which may have been due to claims that certain passages were plagiarized.

“We had no place to live.so I have actually in my life understood what housing insecurity was”, he told lawmakers. Carson asked. “Logic and common sense probably would be the best way”. “We have local HUD officials, and we have people who can assess what the problems are in their area”.

“It will not be my intention to do anything to benefit [Trump]”, Carson said. The department, he said, has a lot of good programs, but “the progress perhaps has not been as great as one would like to see”. According to the recent US Trans Survey, almost one in three respondents had experienced homelessness at some point in their life. “We want it to be a Band-Aid and a springboard to move forward”. Ben Carson, 65, should not be appointed as the next secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Asked to address Carson’s equivocation on the program, Olatoye gave him the benefit of the doubt, stating, “HUD has been responsive in understanding that the one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t work for New York City and other high-cost markets”. The head of the federal government’s ethics agency made a rare public statement on Wednesday evening to say that Trump’s proposal to put his children in charge of the business would not be satisfactory to avoid conflicts and broke with 40 years of precedent.

Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown of OH said the call for a 10 percent budget cut for government agencies would send hundreds of thousands of families into a tailspin. Carson said he “would be more than delighted to discuss those issues”.

The size and influence of HUD could lead to circumstances in which Trump’s businesses, particularly real estate, could benefit, Sen.

If Carson is confirmed, he would be the only African American in Trump’s Cabinet.

Carson, a trailblazing pediatric neurosurgeon at Hopkins, burst onto the political scene in 2013 with a speech at the annual National Prayer Breakfast in Washington. Sherrod Brown, Carson also said he had no problem with affirmative action or integration. The administration had implemented a rule aimed at desegregating housing by withholding funds from communities that fail to demonstrate their projects “affirmatively further” fair housing.
