Barker Motel owner Sally Aldred said when she arrived the next day Maggie was still at the puppies’ side.
‘We see a lot of adorable things here at Barkers but this story takes the cake…’ they wrote. Deanna Thompson, who works at the Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society (AARCS), the organization that rescued the puppies, told ABC News that the puppies are “between 9 and 10 weeks old”, and, “a little bit playful but shy”.
Alex Aldred, who works at the pet motel, explained that both Maggie and her own litter of puppies had recently been adopted out to different families through the Edmonton Humane Society, and he believed the maternal dog was missing her own offspring.
During the night, Maggie was able to escape her kennel, according to a post on the Barkers Pet Motel Facebook.
“They were just all so happy to be together”, Sandy Aldred said.
After being let in with the puppies, Maggie showed the youngsters lots of affection and was allowed to stay the rest of the night.
The reasoning may have to do with the fact that Maggie recently had a litter of her own that was adopted. She seemed to want to get into their kennel, so the owner let her in.
‘We watched her on the cameras and she went straight around and she found their room.
“The puppies needed her, and she needed them”. She then sat outside the puppies’ pen, desperate to get in and give them a cuddle.
It was really sweet. “It was pretty flawless”, said Aldred. Employees figured this out after watching surveillance video, so they made a decision to let the dogs spend some time together.
Aldred returned to the facility, where she was greeted by an ecstatic Maggie.
They were frightened and crying and when a dog named Maggie heard their little cries, her motherly instincts kicked in. It’s just in their nature.
