Cauvery turmoil forces BCCI to shift CSK home matches to Pune

April 12 05:53 2018

Ahead of Cauvery protest by farmers in Chennai the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly chose to shift the IPL matches that have been scheduled to be held in Chennai’s Chepauk Stadium. This was CSK’s first home game since 2015 and the entire atmosphere at the stadium looked electrifying.

The arrested party workers were charged for beating up policemen on duty who were deployed to curb the protest and ensure the match to be held between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) was played without trouble.

Massive protests were witnessed on Tuesday ahead of the match between CSK and Kolkata Knight Riders and a protestor flung a shoe at CSK’s Ravindra Jadeja during the game. Dhoni played the home games of Pune Supergiants in Pune last two years and the former India skipper has an immediate connect to the city. Many out of those were detained by the police. “Without adequate security measures, we didn’t want to risk anything and we told the BCCI to look for alternate venues”, he said.

But those wishing to see the Super Kings in action will now need to head to Pune for “home” matches. Given the recent turn of events, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made a decision to shift IPL 2018 games out of Chennai owing to security reasons. Apart from Pune, Visakhapatnam, Thiruvananthapuram, and Rajkot were selected as stand-by venues. They braved the protests that happened outside Chepauk regarding the Cauvery issue to come out and support their beloved franchise and Chennai rewarded them with a thrilling win.

The Cauvery river waters are shared by four southern states-Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

Also, the venue is said to be logistically viable and hence they have opted for the stadium.

The 37-year-old, who was bought by CSK from Mumbai Indians at January’s auction, wants matches to return to the capital city of the Southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu soon.

No more IPL matches in Chennai this season
