Cavaliers acquire Frye from Magic for Varejao

Adding another scoring threat for star LeBron James, the Cavaliers acquired forward Channing Frye from the Orlando Magic on Thursday in exchange for center Anderson Varejao, two people with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press.

Varejao seems to be a synonymous name with Cleveland as he literally been there his whole career but he’s now being moved to Portland in which can be essentially viewed as a salary dump or a meaningless trade from the average fans point of view.

The Cavs made a decision to trade a new player for a longtime fan favorite.

Varejao, who has played only for the Cavs in his 12 National Basketball Association seasons, can’t re-sign with the Cavs after being released.

In 44 games this season, Frye has averaged 5.2 points and 3.2 rebounds on 43.5 percent shooting and shot 39.7 percent from 3-point range. “There’s very little I’ve enjoyed less”. In terms of being a floor-spacer, Frye is the ideal fit. Miami landed a veteran backup point guard in Brian Roberts, while dumping Andersen’s $5 million salary. “Having him under contract for that length of time is something we felt good about”. Again, we’re not getting him to be a defensive stopper.

I’m already hearing from teams that want Andy Varejao. This is not a non-defender.

“My tenure (in Orlando) was filled with ups and downs, but I know it’s going to benefit this team in the future”, Frye said in a text message to the Orlando Sentinal. They traded away Blair, Humphries, and a top-nine protected first-round pick for the Phoenix Suns’ Markieff Morris, who was a solid piece for the Suns a year ago, averaging 15.3 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 2.3 assists.

Cunningham appeared in more games for the Cavs (40) than Varejao has this year (31).

Harris, meanwhile, is owed $17.2 million next season, $16 million in 2017-18 and $14.8 million in 2018-19 – money that the Pistons now must pay instead of the Magic.

James’ portfolio of sponsorship deals with the likes of Nike, Kia, McDonald’s and Coca-Cola push his earning capacity even higher, meaning he could soon become one of the top five highest paid athletes in the world.
