Celebrate Dr. Suess’ Birthday and Read Across America Day

In continuing the celebration for reading, the county library is once again partnering with In-N-Out Burger for it’s Cover to Cover program, kicking off March 4 and continuing through April 15.

This week, students and teachers at Marguerite Vann Elementary School are celebrating the birthday of the widely-known children’s book author, Dr. Suess, during the National Education Association’s annual program, Read Across America. “We have all kinds of great readers today.” said Amy Howbert, an Instructional Coach at the school. If students can’t read, they’ll have trouble all day.

Parents and special guests also attended the festivities to read with the children.

Students from Austin Tracy Elementary School gathered in the school library on Thursday morning and listened to Ana Kate Froggett read Dr. Seuss’ “Green Eggs and Ham“.

Teacher Jana Hedgecock said each day the students are dressing up to match with a different book by Dr. Seuss.

Clifford said he met with fourth-graders Wednesday and spoke to them about literary devices such as personification using material from Dr. Seuss.

– All eyes were looking up at an old furry friend last Saturday when Dr. Seuss’ beloved Cat in the Hat dropped by Sparta Books to kick off Love of Reading Week. “Wrapping up the week on Friday, we are reading “Fox in Socks” and everyone is wearing wild socks”.

By 10:30 a.m. the festivities were done, and students returned to their rooms for more reading fun.

“I never liked to read until I found this one series”, she said. “A lot of them don’t get to see a lot of reading at home”. Her classmate Audra Newman, a blond-haired young woman, said both of them loved reading, without the slightest hint of sass. “Making reading fun helps the students learn to read”.

“We thought doing something for one week instead of one day would make more of an impact”, council member Maguire Roosa said.

“Literacy is the foundation of everything that we do”, Brasher said. “The more I did it, the more I learned to like it, so hopefully that happens”. “I looked up to them”. She likes “Green Eggs and Ham” best. She finished her entire plate and even wanted seconds. “The kids are so excited”, she said. “Which is really good”. The book was a favorite of her son, who is now 20, she said.

“I like them”, he said.
