CES 2016: 100+ VR Titles Currently In Development, Says Sony

January 08 00:51 2016

PlayStation VR is set to release in the first half of this year, though a specific price and launch date are yet to be revealed.

A SuperData Research report estimates that approximately $1.9 million PlayStation VR headsets will be sold in 2016, with a price between $400 and $600. The PlayStation VR strikes me as the main headset that needs to impress and sell early, while the Oculus can be a slower burn.

What do you think about the potential cost of PlayStation VR?

Details on the market price and exact launch date of the PlayStation VR are still unknown as Sony remained mum about the device in the CES 2016 press conference in Las Vegas. There are now 35 Million PS4 units that are capable of running VR titles using PSVR, as oppose to 13 million PCs for Rift.

With the Oculus Rift headset priced at $599 and it being a technically superior device, it seems very unlikely that Sony would price the PlayStation VR so high, considering that many are expecting it to be one of the more affordable virtual reality headsets on the market. The Oculus Rift’s first consumer Head Mounted display will cost an eye-watering $600. We’ve sold close to 36 million units, that’s a huge audience we will cater to.

In an interview with the BBC, CEO Kaz Hirai added that the 200 developers who had already signed up to the company’s PlayStation VR Program were “a testament to the kind of support that we’re getting from the content creation community on PlayStation VR“. Thankfully, fans of PlayStation VR don’t have much to worry about: at CES 2016, Sony confirmed that over 100 different VR-enabled titles are now in development.

Virtual reality is already proving to be one of the biggest trends of the year. “Console gamers’ pre-ownership of supporting hardware also makes them likelier to spend, with 19 [percent] of console gamers willing to pay more than $400 on VR compared to only 10 [percent] of PC gamers”.

“It’ll be a great product coming out later this year”.
