It was a sad day for Nigeria’s football as the home based Super Eagles slumped to a 0-1 defeat in the hands of the Sily Nationale of Guinea, and got themselves eliminated in the 2016 African Nations Championship in Rwanda.
It was a lacklustre performance in the first half of the game by the Super Eagles, and all efforts by second-half substitutes Chisom Chikatara and Bright Onyedikachi to force the equaliser proved abortive.
The Guinea team responded quickly and leveled matters after a minute with a well taken goal through Aboubacar Sylla.
Guinea’s pressure paid off when substitute Aboubacar Kile Bangoura leveled matters in the 79th minute to make sure they picked a point from the match.
This followed the loss of the Super Eagles to the Syli Nationale of Guinea in the last group stage match of the championship. Nigeria managed to create few chances in the second half but lacked composure in their finishing touch.
Nigeria top the group with four points while the Guineans have garnered only two points from previous two matches against Tunisia and Niger and will need a win over Nigeria in this encounter.
Both Tunisia and Guinea will discover their quarter-final opponents tomorrow when Group D draws to a close, with Zambia having already qualified but facing competition from Mali for top spot.
Ahmed Akaichi added a third, and his fourth of the tournament, with 13 minutes left to play.
