The “Coloring Book” rapper, also known as Chancelor Bennett, donated the money to the Chicago Public Schools Foundation on Monday, livestreaming his press conference on Instagram.
While Chance’s discussion with Rauner was broadly about CPS funding, it took off after Rauner vetoed a bill that was set to delegate $215 million in funding to the city’s school systems.
The bulk of the money will come from ticket sales from his upcoming tour, he said, thanking his fans. “You are an example of the power of arts education”, Obama tweeted late Monday, the same day the artist announced his donation and presented a check at the Westcott Elementary School in Auburn-Gresham.
Chance said he would do all he can to “protect Chicago’s most valuable resource: its children”. “This about taking care of the kids”, Chance said.
“The governor gave me a lot of vague answers in our meeting and since has called me over the weekend”, he told reporters.
“The arts are essential to teach students the valuable lessons like practice makes flawless and small differences can have large effects”.
This is the product of an ongoing battle between Chicago public school system and the state of IL.
Chance further stressed the need for others to help look after kids in Chicago Public Schools.
After the pair’s meeting did not lead to a political breakthrough, Chance did not hold back in his rebukes of Rauner as he announced his donation.
The first option presented by Rauner on Monday includes passing legislation that would allow Mayor Rahm Emanuel to tap into the city’s tax increment financing funds to cover the cost.
Meanwhile, the budget hole could cause an early end to the school year for some 400,000 students. The governor released two plans just hours before Chance’s press conference, which you can learn more about here.
Rauner met with Chance on Friday, culminating a week in which the governor actively worked to dissuade Republican senators from voting for the Grand Bargain legislative deal negotiated by Senate President John Cullerton and Republican Leader Christine Radogno.
